DO NOT RECOMMEND PLS READ honestly shocked that the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is promoted as a relaxing, family-friendly destination. What should have been a peaceful picnic and nature experience turned into a stressful and unsafe visit, and I would strongly warn others to think twice before going — especially if you have children. The biggest and most alarming issue is safety, particularly the high risk of encountering poisonous snakes in areas where people are clearly encouraged to sit, eat, and relax. Picnic areas, walking paths, and grassy spaces had little to no effective protection or visible management to prevent snakes from entering places where families lay out blankets or let kids walk around. This is not remote bushland — these are designated public leisure areas. While Australia obviously has snakes, the issue here is how poorly the risk is managed. There are insufficient warning signs, no clear guidance about where snakes are most common, and no obvious preventative measures such as regular inspections, fencing, or controlled clearing around picnic zones. Expecting visitors — many of whom are tourists or families — to just “know better” is irresponsible. The gardens are also vast and isolated, which only makes the safety concerns worse. If something were to go wrong — a snake bite, a medical emergency, a child wandering off — help would not be easily or quickly accessible. There are long stretches with no staff presence, limited shade, and minimal emergency information. This creates a dangerous situation that feels completely overlooked by management. Paths are uneven in places, signage is confusing or outdated, and some areas feel neglected rather than carefully curated. For a place that markets itself as a world-class botanic garden, the lack of risk management and visitor care is unacceptable. What makes this even more frustrating is that this could be a beautiful and educational space if safety were taken seriously. Instead, it feels like visitors are being exposed to real hazards without proper warning or protection. A public garden should not feel like a survival exercise.
Beautiful playground with heaps of great equipment. Fenced off, with picnic tables. Epic flying fox. Immediately adjacent to a sweet café.
Great place for a family picnic. Lots of tracks if you want to explore. It is a huge place. Didn’t find any wildlife but there were lots of birds. Might be difficult if you visit on a hot summer day as there is not much share and it is a bit isolated and arid. I went on a cloudy day and it was a good place to visit. This place needs more restaurants and possibly a bird park to attract more tourists.
We check council regulations, official sources, and community reviews to verify dog access at every venue. Access may change — always check on-site signage. Something wrong or missing? Submit feedback. How it works.
