Dog-friendly beaches in Hunter

Bagnalls Beach sits on the sheltered side of Port Stephens, with consistently calm water and a soft sandy entry. The conditions remain gentle regardless of ocean swell outside the heads, making it a stable environment for dogs in the water. The adjacent reserve adds extra space to move and settle, giving it more of a destination feel compared to smaller beaches.

Hams Beach is a quiet off-leash beach at Swansea Heads with a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere. There's some shade from vegetation at the back of the beach, and the setting feels more secluded than many of the busier dog beaches. Parking is available off Mawson Close, and there are bins provided. Council recently made changes to the off-leash boundaries, so check on-site signage for the current setup.

Horseshoe Beach is a sheltered harbour beach inside the breakwall at Newcastle — the calm water and gentle entry make it a popular choice for dogs experiencing the beach for the first time. Off-leash access runs from sunrise to sunset. It can get crowded at peak times, so early mornings tend to be the best sessions. Parking and a playground are nearby.

Redhead Beach has an off-leash section south of Second Creek, available at all times. The beach is long enough that it rarely feels crowded even with other visitors around. Dogs are prohibited north of Second Creek. Parking is available nearby.

Blacksmiths Beach is a long stretch of soft yellow sand south of Lake Macquarie — wide, often empty, and one of the larger 24-hour off-leash beaches in the Hunter. The off-leash section runs from the Awabakal Avenue car park north to the Belmont Golf Club boundary. Locals describe walking for kilometres without seeing another person.

Little Beach in Stockton is a relaxed dog-friendly beach where dogs can run off-leash on the sand and take to the water under effective control. The waves are gentle and there is usually plenty of room, which makes it an easy place for a swim and a play. It suits a calm beach outing, with the smaller surf good for dogs that prefer quieter water. A pleasant, low-key spot for a beach walk.

Sunset Beach is a quiet beach at Soldiers Point with a picnic area, toilets and good sunset views. Dogs are welcome on-leash, in line with Port Stephens' general on-leash rule for council reserves, with up to four dogs per person. Park on Sunset Boulevard and walk down to the sand for an easy stroll by the water. A peaceful on-leash spot for an evening walk.

Dixon Park Beach is a coastal reserve at Merewether with a fenced playground, parking and good facilities. Dogs are allowed off-leash in the reserve area under effective control, and are prohibited on the patrolled swimming beach. There is drinking water, toilets and BBQ facilities on hand. A handy off-leash reserve above the sand.

Birubi Beach is a vast, wild stretch of coastline — over 30 kilometres of sand dunes and open ocean. Off-leash access is seasonal: May to September dogs can be off-leash at all times, while October to April access is limited to 5pm–9am. The ocean is unpatrolled and powerful, so this is a beach for big sandy runs rather than swimming. Dogs must never enter the dune rehabilitation areas.
