What people say
Lion Island is located at the mouth of the Hawkesbury River, between Sydney and the NSW Central Coast. It is named for its resemblance to the Sphinx in Egypt when viewed from afar. Accessible only by boat. As a nature preserve it is administered by NPWS and visits are not allowed unless approved.
I recently visited Lion Island with high hopes of seeing its namesake, only to leave feeling quite disappointed. Despite its intriguing name, there wasn’t a single lion in sight—neither real nor even symbolic. I expected at least a statue, some historical connection, or something to live up to its bold name, but instead, I was met with a picturesque yet uneventful landscape. The island itself is beautiful, with stunning views and a serene atmosphere, but the lack of lions felt like false advertising. If you’re heading there solely for the lions, you’ll likely be let down, but if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway or a spot for scenic photos, it might still be worth the trip.
An amazing place to watch wild life and fish if you can get a good day with people invading your space.
