Overpriced, run-down, and nowhere near 4-star – very disappointing stay This was a deeply disappointing stay and not even close to what you would expect given the price point, previous reviews, or a hotel advertising itself as 4-star. The room was extremely small and in poor condition. There were stains and marks on the walls, visible mould around the air-conditioning, and the mattress sagged badly. The carpet was stained and gave off a musty smell, made worse by the fact that the windows cannot be opened for fresh air — a huge let-down in a mountain location. Noise insulation is virtually non-existent; the walls are paper thin and conversations from neighbouring rooms can be heard clearly. The bathroom is very dated. The shower is old with poor water pressure. There are no sheer curtains — only block-out curtains — meaning during the day you are either sitting in darkness or being baked by the sun. Accessibility is also an issue. There is no lift and stairs everywhere. Guests with mobility challenges should be aware, as no assistance was offered with luggage up two storeys. Food availability is completely unacceptable for a hotel charging over $500 per night. The restaurant does not offer food after 8pm, and the bar also stops serving food at 8pm. There is no room service, no late-night menu, no bar snacks, and no alternative food options whatsoever once 8pm passes. There is also no minibar, no snacks in the room, and no vending facilities. If you return to the hotel hungry after 8pm, you are left with nothing. This alone makes it very clear that this property does not meet 4-star standards. Breakfast was equally underwhelming. Hot buffet items were lukewarm at best, and the coffee took so long to arrive that breakfast was finished before it appeared. Do not attend or book breakfast, visit the local cafes. The icing on the cake was at 6am the fire alarm went off with no direction or communication. Fire doors closed automatically, and it was genuinely confusing and unsettling trying to work out how to exit the building, or if it was necessary to evacuate. It was set off by someone smoking on the balcony, where they should be smoking. Surely the sensitivity threshold of the detectors should be looked at. No apologies were made or compensation offered for the abrupt wake up call. The bar is dark, dingy, and completely lacking atmosphere or entertainment. Beverage options are very limited and extremely overpriced. There is no pool, no gym, and no meaningful amenities to justify the cost. We paid over $500 per night. A fair price for what is actually offered would be closer to $200. Whatever you do, do not pay over $250 — you will be bitterly disappointed. This is not a 4-star hotel by any reasonable measure; it is 2–3 star at best. The only positive is the view, which is genuinely beautiful. We checked out two days early due to how dissatisfied we were. To their credit, the unused nights were refunded. However, I sent an internal email outlining these issues and received no response or apology from management or the owner, which is why I am leaving this review. This is not a relaxing or romantic getaway. The property feels tired and run down, with “heritage” or “vintage” used as an excuse for poor upkeep. Heritage does not mean mould, stained carpets, or worn-out furnishings. After a long day of sightseeing, this is not somewhere you look forward to returning to.

We spent two nights at the HydroMajestic, taking advantage of the summer special for our wedding anniversary and we were sorry to leave. Such a special place. The hotel has been restored to a magnificent level in all the common areas and it is much bigger than expected. Our room & bed was comfortable with amazing views across the Megalong Valley - weather permitting of course. The service was excellent across the board from reception to the Wintergarden and to the cleaning staff. The service level is comparable to any 5 star hotel across Asia. Marcus gets a special mention here, where nothing is too much trouble. The food on all accounts was amazing. We had two dinners and two breakfasts and on all accounts it did not fail to impress, complimented with the outstanding service from the wait staff. There are only a few issues which need improving. The cafe had one person on duty in a busy period in the day, which meant the wait time was extensive just to get served at the counter. We left before ordering as did a few others. The historic tour was somewhat interesting and was advertised as an hour long. However, it went for 1hour and 48 minutes and the tour guide, Danny, was not the most engaging in how he presented this beautiful building's history even though he had all the knowledge being the curator. The tour was too long on this day.

My wife and I spent a wonderful and relaxing 3 days and 2 nights during Christmas week 2025 at the Hydro Majestic Hotel. The hotel was historic and quaint and they did there best to keep it that way. The rooms could use a little updating but we felt that was overlooked by the overall comfortable relaxing feel of the hotel, the wonderful views of the valley, the excellent food and attentive service by all of the staff. We were met and checked in by Mahesh Kumarasena, saw him throughout our stay and then checked out with him. We had several long and friendly conversations. A genuine nice and professional person! During our dining at the Wintergarden we also were treated very professionally and nice by Bijan and Viney.

Had high tea at the hotel for my husband’s birthday December 2025..We stayed here in 2003 and visited again in 2023 when we felt the hotel had let itself go a bit. However I was delighted to see that the hotel has been refurbished to a high standard and restored to its old beauty. It’s such an amazing location with fantastic history. The high tea was very tasty. The host found us a window table so that we had views of the incredible megalong valley. The sandwiches, scones and cakes were of very good quality and we had to take some home! It defeated us. A couple of minor points: the staff were not great at identifying when we required more tea or water etc. Although when they came they were very friendly and courteous. Sadly an extra charge for anything more than one cup of coffee or tea can only be viewed as extortion. We have had many many afternoon teas and the tea or coffee has always been limitless. It doesn’t cost much and left a little bitter taste. Please maybe add 5 dollars to the cost but allow your guests to have as much tea or coffee as they want! Overall though we were really pleased with our day. Thanks

Spent the last 2 nights in this beautiful hotel. We received an upgrade to the valley view rooms as we were celebrating a birthday which was a nice gesture. Marcus at reception was great, very helpful and pleasant. Service was very good all round. We enjoyed breakfast twice at the Wintergarden with an excellent food selection. Yes, as I read in other reviews, the rooms are a bit outdated but you don’t stay at the Hydro Majestic expecting it to be new and modern, you stay here because you appreciate history and luxury from past decades. Everywhere you look there is a piece of history you won’t find anywhere else. We had a beautiful stay and hope to be back.
