Everything here is baked to exquisite perfection. Coffees are just as good and very reasonably priced. The people are lovely. Backerei R is exactly what was missing in Kingsford.

I’d been wanting to try Bäckerei R ever since they opened late last year. A few days ago, I finally made the effort to stop by before work and picked up a box of pastries to share with my colleagues. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the light, calming vibe. The space feels inviting and relaxed, and the pastry display is stunning—everything beautifully presented with clear tags and prices. The smell is heavenly, all buttery and rich, making you want to sample everything. I ended up choosing a raspberry pistachio bowtie, a hazelnut & yuzu pain au, mushroom cheese pastry, a pretzel croissant, a plain croissant, and a chocolate banana danish. Every single item was delicious, but the hazelnut and yuzu pastry really stood out—the fresh citrus brightness of the yuzu paired perfectly with the nutty depth of hazelnut. The pretzel croissant was another highlight: crisp and crunchy on the outside with that classic buttery, flaky interior. What impressed me most was the overall quality and flavour. The pastries here are very close to Lode Pies, which I consider the top pastry shop in Sydney. It’s such a joy to finally have another alternative at that level. Honestly, Sydney needs more pastry shops aiming for Lode-level quality rather than the usual mediocre offerings, and Bäckerei R feels like a step in that direction. A friend later mentioned that the bakery is owned by the same people behind Organic Bread in paddington. I wasn’t a big fan of that spot, but I’m glad to say Bäckerei R completely won me over—the pastries and croissants here are on a whole other level.

March 2025: bought a bag of discounted leftover bread via Too Good to Go and got try all these items for only $8 - sourdough loaf, baguette, pretzel, sesame bagel, and is it a seeded ciabatta? Everything was great (it's leftover from the same day so still perfectly fresh) - baguette nice and soft in the middle, ciabatta and bagel were tender, pretzel chewy and salty, and sourdough is good too - made good avo toast. June 2025: tried their cheese tomato danish ($8.50) with bocconcini, cherry tomatoes, pesto and tomato relish. I love that they offer to heat it up (but I declined this time as I was taking it home). Gave it a blast in the air fryer at home, and it was delicious!! Good amount of cheese, not too much. The tomatoes are naturally sweet. The pesto is fragrant, while the tomato relish is sweet, savoury and slightly spicy. A flavourful pastry that has its own personality without being overly heavy. Their matcha is also surprisingly great! I've been scarred by too many hot matchas that just taste like milk. They ask if you want it sweetened or not - I got unsweetened and it was lovely and green, had the natural sweetness and umami of good quality matcha, and a pretty big cup too for $6.50 (mine $7.50 w/ oat milk). Would get again, or maybe try the iced one in warmer weather.

Walked into Bäckerei R not knowing exactly what to expect. minimalist setup, tight pastry selection, no flashy signage, but what I walked out with was super rich and indulgent. I grabbed the Banana Chocolate Danish and was very impressed. Buttery, flaky croissant base with visible layers of lamination, topped with gooey banana slices, rich chocolate drizzle, and a golden crumble that added the perfect crunch. It felt like a cross between banana bread and a Ferrero Rocher croissant, warm, sweet, sticky, and unapologetically bold. One thing that really stood out: they offered to heat up the pastry, even for takeaway. That’s such a small but thoughtful gesture that makes a huge difference, turns a good pastry into a fresh-out-the-oven experience. That kind of care and consistency isn’t common. The space itself leans towards takeaway, but still has a couple of seats for a quick bite. Minimal, bright, and clean, very much a “let the product speak for itself” kind of vibe. Staff are polite, efficient, and low-key, just like the shop.
