The Bay Hotel and Diner

This is a great hotel and diner, popular with the locals with an amazing beer garden out front across from the amazing Maroubra Beach. Great service, decent prices and well cared for venue. I've only been 100 times lol

I’m a local and have been coming to The Bay Hotel and Diner for a long time, but after this experience I won’t be returning. My partner and I came in for lunch and sat outside as I’d left my shoes down at the beach. My partner went inside, ordered our food and two beers, and the staff happily took the order and poured the beer. As my partner was waiting at the bar, the older female manager walked past and rudely demanded, “Who’s the other drink for? Show me both of your IDs.” My partner explained that I was seated outside without shoes. The manager responded with a foul attitude, “I’ll get security to go find him,” and then did absolutely nothing leaving my partner awkwardly standing at the bar, unsure what to do. After waiting a while, I came inside myself to present my ID. The second I stepped in the door I was immediately aggressively told “Get out, you’re not wearing shoes.” I tried to explain the situation but was interrupted with “You’re on a licensed premises, put some shoes on.” The issue isn't the rules, it's the attitude. The manager is extremely rude, aggressive, and completely unprofessional. This could have been handled calmly and respectfully, especially considering we’re locals who’ve supported this venue for a long time. Unfortunately, this is not a one off experience. Us, as well as other locals have been treated rudely by this woman on many occasions, it's surprising she maintains her job. I haven’t been spoken to like that in a long time. We walked out and won’t be coming back.

The food was okay, even good, but the service sucks. I ordered at the counter and the staff repeated my order, yet after a while they still missed one item. How does that happen? When I asked about it, one of the staff members seemed more concerned that I wasn’t wearing shoes than about providing good service. I also had to go back to the counter to ask for the juice and ice cream that come with the kids’ meal because they forgot them.

The restaurant service was horrible. The cashier repeated after each item and still had one entry missing. When we asked, they never apologized, instead gave us attitude. The kid meal comes with a juice and they never brought it to the table, we had to go asked for it. It also came with ice cream and have attitude when we asked for it. The burger was so dried that my son couldn’t eat it.

The Bay Hotel and Diner is hands down one of the best spots to enjoy a cold beer and a relaxing lunch with an absolutely stunning view. The atmosphere is super laid-back, and the view alone makes it worth a visit — but the food takes it to the next level. I highly recommend the New Yorker schnitzels — they’re perfectly cooked, packed with flavour, and definitely a standout on the menu. Honestly, every dish we ordered was delicious, and the portion sizes are very generous. You’re definitely getting great value for money here. Whether you’re stopping in for a drink or a full meal, this place delivers. I’ll definitely be coming back again!
