The food is always delicious, cooked with care and full of flavour. The bar staff are friendly, welcoming, and always good for a yarn. The place has real country charm and is a great spot to stay when visiting Portland. It’s a pub that’s proudly embraced its heritage, and the outdoor area out the back is a hidden gem — definitely worth checking out if you’re travelling through. And don’t be alarmed by the sign on the door — the three live-in residents only add to the experience (and are far better mannered than some pub-goers I’ve met!).

This has to be one of the friendliest pubs I’ve ever been in. I honestly wish this was my local pub. We stopped in for a casual lunch and ended up staying most of the afternoon, chatting with locals and watching motor racing on the TV from comfy chairs by the fire. Even though it was your standard pub kind of menu, there was nothing ordinary about the food. Freshly and efficiently prepared, our food was magnificent. Fish and chips, with salad: lovely fresh fish, crispy batter, perfectly cooked chips. Nothing oily or soggy on this plate. Salads: fresh and crispy, with a light, tangy dressing. Contained a good variety of ingredients- way, way better than the limp lettuce and quarter of a tomato you get in most pubs. Chicken parmigiana: delicious and hot, accompanied by excellent chips Satay chicken burger: a very generous burger, packed with well-cooked chicken schnitzel and salad accompanied by a delicious and tangy satay sauce. Again, the chips were excellent. There are some steps to get into the pub, which might be a consideration for people with mobility issues. But if you can manage the steps, the visit will be well worth it. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve made new friends.

What a find. I love rocking up to old pubs and supporting the folks who run them. What it might lack the rooms is made up with friendly staff and owners. Love the welcome I got...the food was amazing . The town made me welcome too. I took in a mo ie from back in the day. A very pleasant stay in your little town.
