MAIZ Mexican Food is a pub in Newtown. It hasn't yet been confirmed as dog-friendly, so it's best to check with the venue before visiting.
Maíz has a special place in my Mexican heart, food is 10/10 wether is lunch/ brunch or dinner menu. Everything is so well thought and planned. Ingredients are so fresh and you can taste the Mexican imported chiles. The cocktails are to die for! I mean Joaco the Mexican chef and co owner has done a magnificent job. You can’t miss the machetes, the mains ( which may change per season and their paletas that are wow). Definitivamente a place that you can’t missed if you are looking for delicious Mexican food in Sydney. Also the new venue is so nice :))) congratulations!
Definitely a top spot for me in this area! Whilst I can’t speak on the authenticity of the place I went with some Mexican friends and they enjoyed it plenty! The food is spicy so be careful if you can’t handle spice but it was amazing! Atmosphere was very nice as well! However I will say that the bathrooms are a little janky, but they all function so I can’t complain! I also highly recommend the horchata for a drink because it was so good it’s got me wanting to go back just to get another sip!
best Mexican in Newtown, and you can't change my mind. highly recommend an alcohol-free marg to get ya started!! we started off with a hug in a mug Esquites $10, slow-cooked corn in epazote broth, chili mayonnaise, cheese, piquin chili & lime. punchy, zesty yet comforting all in one. for a little side we nabbed the Papas a la Diabla $14, fried chat potatoes, served with fermented chillies sauce, jocoque & dill. soft and filling! we shared a couple Taquito Al Pastor $10 each, char pork tenderloin "al pastor", with fresh tortillas, tepache glaze, morita & pineapple salsa. that pineapple salsa had a kick but was full of flavour. we also shared the Tostada de Callo y Camarón $16 each, a scallop & prawn tostada, with fennel, cucumber, jalapeño, avocado, coriander & lime dressing which was a great refreshing bite. another cold dish, the Aguachile de Temporada $26 with cured market fish, basil and chilli verde aguachile, cucumber & watermelon was lovely to cleanse the palate with its fresh and bright profile. for mains, we had to order the Volcan de Pulpo $38. A Grilled Fremantle octopus served on a crispy tostada, with pasilla chilli adobo, Oaxaca cheese, char pineapple salsa, avocado purée, cherry tomatoes & Octopus consomé on the side. Just wow, this dish was mind-blowingly satisfying, and that consome was just unreal in flavour. recommend to drink a sip after each bite of the octopus! a sweet treat was definitely needed, we ordered the Tamal $18, sweet corn tamal, seasonal fruit, vanilla bean Chantilly which was not only unique but delicate and warm. you should absolutely order this one!
Why did I not visit sooner!! I’m disappointed that I did not come here sooner! The food is incredible, the price is very reasonable, the service is excellent and my oh my the drinks. It all wraps up to being a-maiz-ing…..sorry I had to go there! I’ll say no more, visit and let Maiz leave you as we were, wanting more. Currently working out when we go back.
Not sure what upside-down realm iteration of this place I went to but a very different experience to what was expected. $70pp set menu where the only mildly enjoyable element was a soup in a huskee cup…. But you can’t keep the cup. Cevicé tostada was inedible - and I’ll eat some awkward stuff. Just so fishy and sort of par-cooked and confusing with the appearance of boiled chicken. Maybe it was old fish so they figured they should heat it up to be safe? Duck for the main was as if it was chucked in the slow cooker….. alone…. For hours…. Then covered In a grease soaked corn pancake. Great looking mole sauce that tasted of nothing whatsoever. A woman who walked past pointed at the restaurant and said ‘crazy good authentic Mexican’….. and it all hurt even more. I couldn’t make the maths work on how this little spread was charged at $140 for two… unless the chips and guac were $98 (also quite good to be fair) Oh and please nobody ask me about the horchata icy pole. It’s a nice spot to sit and the service was fine but I can’t get the smell of old fish out of my hands so it’s a thumbs down.
