Thornton Park Thornton Park has stunning views of the harbour, city and  the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Barangaroo Reserve and Barangaroo plus Luna Park and blues Point ,The picnic tables and grass areas are a great place to relax. It has a beautiful rose garden as a feature piece making it popular for weddings! When I was there a cruise liner came from the white bay cruise terminal and passed by me going under Sydney Harbour Bridge to leave Sydney. Thornton Park in Balmain East remains one of the most picturesque "hidden gems" of the Inner West, offering arguably the best front-row seats to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Barangaroo. However, if you've visited recently, you’ll notice that its status as a tranquil escape is currently balanced with some necessary—and occasionally delayed—structural repairs. Here is a review of the park’s current state and an update on the ongoing works as of January 2026. The Experience: A Five-Star View Despite the construction fencing, the park’s primary charm is intact. It’s a favorite for: The Vibe: A quiet, residential atmosphere that feels miles away from the city despite being directly across from it. The Amenities: The iconic rose garden remains a highlight, and the grassy embankment is still the premier spot for a low-key sunset picnic. The Location: Being steps from the Balmain East Ferry Wharf makes it incredibly accessible for a quick escape from the CBD. The Repairs: What’s Happening? The most significant impact on the park currently involves the Balmain East Seawall and Footpath. The Issue: The structural integrity of the seawall at the end of Darling Street (adjacent to the park and wharf) began failing, rendering the harbor-side pathway unstable and unsafe for pedestrians. Current Status (January 2026): Transport for NSW is currently in the "detailed design and planning" phase. You will likely see workers on-site throughout January conducting night-time inspections and drilling boreholes to inform the final repair plan. Timeline: Design and approvals are expected to wrap up by March/April 2026, with major remediation work to follow. Unfortunately, this means the pathway directly hugging the water will likely remain fenced off for several more months. The "Living Seawall" Innovation On a positive note, one of the most successful "repairs" to the park in recent years is the Living Seawall installation. These are habitat-enhancing panels fitted to the existing stone walls. They have successfully turned a sterile structure into a thriving marine ecosystem, attracting seaweed and shellfish that you can often spot at low tide. The Verdict Rating: 4/5 Thornton Park is still a must-visit for the views alone, but the current repairs do dampen the "foreshore stroll" experience. If you are planning a visit, stick to the upper grassy areas and the rose garden to avoid the construction zones near the ferry wharf. Tip: If the noise from the seawall inspections is too much, walk five minutes up the hill to Illoura Reserve for a similar view with a bit more peace.

Stunning views of the harbour bridge and ferry. I saw police fine some people for fishing without a license so be careful!

A lovely fairly new playground at the balmain east wharf. It has beautiful views of the harbour bridge and water. There is plenty of grass area and seating to have a picnic with friends or family while the kids play. Lovely rose garden nearby also.

Cute little park in a great water view location. It's right near Balmain East Wharf, so I always go when I pass by. I love how they always have beautiful roses. The best part is: they smell divine!! 🌹
