Sandy Bay Beach in Mosman is a serene, tucked-away gem that offers a much quieter experience than its famous neighbor, Balmoral. Located on the northern side of the Mosman peninsula near The Spit, it is particularly renowned as one of Sydney’s premier off-leash dog beaches. Sandy Bay Beach: The Atmosphere Sandy Bay is a tranquil, sheltered harbor beach characterized by calm, shallow waters and a relaxed vibe. Because it’s protected from the ocean swell, it feels more like a giant saltwater pool. It is an ideal spot for those who want to avoid the massive crowds of Bondi or Manly. Key Features Dog Heaven: On weekdays, the beach is a paradise for dog owners. Your furry friends can swim and run off-leash, making it a very social spot for local pet lovers. Water Activities: The flat water is perfect for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking. It's also a popular spot for windsurfing when the breeze picks up. The "Vanishing" Beach: Be aware that Sandy Bay is tidal; at high tide, the sandy strip can almost completely disappear, leaving only the grassy reserve behind it. Facilities (Or Lack Thereof) Minimalist: This is a "back-to-basics" beach. There are no public toilets, showers, or change rooms directly on the sand. Seating & Shade: There are some benches and bins, but natural shade is limited. Parking: Parking is very restricted and can be difficult on weekends. Many visitors park at the nearby Clontarf Reserve and walk over. Nearby Attractions If you’re visiting Sandy Bay, the surrounding Mosman and Middle Harbour area is packed with top-tier attractions: 1. Nature & Walks Spit to Manly Walk: Sandy Bay sits right along this iconic 10km coastal track. You can jump on the trail here to see stunning harbor views and secret coves. Clontarf Reserve: Just a short walk north, this park features a netted swimming baths, a large playground, BBQs, and full public facilities (toilets/cafes) that Sandy Bay lacks. Chinamans Beach: A hidden, sophisticated beach about a 15-minute walk south. It’s uncrowded and perfect for a peaceful swim. 2. Dining & Relaxation Ormeggio at The Spit: For a high-end experience, this two-hatted Italian restaurant offers incredible views over the marina. Chiosco by Ormeggio: A more casual, "barefoot-friendly" version of its sibling next door. Great for authentic Italian pasta and seafood. St Siandra: A vibrant, Mediterranean-inspired bar and restaurant located right on a private white-sand beach at The Spit. 3. Family Fun Taronga Zoo: A 10-minute drive away, offering world-class animal exhibits with the best backdrop in the city. Balmoral Beach: If you need a more "civilized" beach day with shark nets, a promenade, and the famous Bathers
Great medium size off leash dog beach. There isn't much else around and the metered parking has limited spots
If you have a dog, it's probably a 5. 🐶 But if you're looking for a swimming beach, a sand castle beach or a beach to have a great picnic or meet with friends, this isn't it. Instead, head to Clontarf, just a beach north. Sandy Bay has no toilets or picnic facilities, with very limited parking. It does have a lovely sandstone bit on the Northern side!
Lovely place to take dogs out for a swim/run esp on a sunny day! If you walk a few metres forward, great places for the hoomans to take a dip as well! :) Metered parking and like any other nice places in Sydney, can get crowded on weekends and holz. Even then, it’s not as bad as the more famous places like Bondi/Coogee
We check council regulations, official sources, and community reviews to verify dog access at every venue. Access may change — always check on-site signage. Something wrong or missing? Submit feedback. How it works.
