The Grumpy Baker Waverton is a cafe in Waverton. We don't yet have enough signals to confirm whether dogs are allowed. It's best to check with the venue before visiting with your dog. Just 150m away, King St Reserve is a great nearby park for a walk with your dog.
I came here to try their pies and sausage rolls, and also got a caramel slice and coffee. The food wasn’t bad, it was just completely average. There’s absolutely better pies, sweet treats and sausage rolls nearby. The coffee, however, was actually bad. I couldn’t finish it. I later watched the barista tap out old coffee grounds before grinding more into the basket without wiping it out to get rid of old burnt grounds in there. Honestly would avoid the coffee. That being said, the freshly baked bread did look yummy and would be great I’m sure.
This review is based on my first visit to the Waverton location of The Grumpy Baker. I’ve been to the other Grumpy Baker café in Vaucluse and usually find them consistent, with a great selection of pies and baked goods. We visited at lunchtime on a Monday, and while it’s great to see it so busy, the experience felt quite chaotic. There was no clear structure around seating, people skipped queues, tables weren’t cleared for a while, and despite plenty of staff, the flow just didn’t work. I ordered a matcha, which was very disappointing. On the plus side, the coffee ordered by the person dining with me was excellent. I also had a pastry, which was nice, and the overall selection is strong. We sat outside, but inside was extremely hot, and with crowds and people bumping into tables, it didn’t feel like a place to relax. We finished our drinks quickly and left. I’d give this location another try at a quieter time or as a takeaway stop, as other Grumpy Baker locations have been much better and this one has been recommended to me a few times.
Views of the harbour from outdoor tables, went in the morning to buy a steaming hot raspberry muffin, straight from the oven. Very nice milk lab almond milk too for wonderful coffee. Medium sized almond coffee at just $6.20. Pastries were in the $5-$6 range. Very competitive. Cool vibe, nice staff, Sydney Sun. Can life get any better?
Starting with the pros: The pastries were great; even into the afternoon, the lamination on the pain au chocolat & rugelach were intensely crisp & distinct. The burger was surprisingly next level: the burger was juicy and PERFECTLY cooked and all the other trimmings (caramelized onions, pickles) were well prepared. Now the Cons: Where things fell off was the service which could be felt in the atmosphere. A spill by a server busing the table was only half wiped up even after being asked—entire table pooled or streaked by water was what we were offered. What wasn’t good was the pies with lukewarm fillings. The seafood and harissa pies were flaky but cold on the inside. The potato bourekas were flaky but again, cold on the inside.
Highly Recommend 🌟⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 I stopped in here for Breakfast after i saw the line-up at the door. The best aroma greeted me as i entered. Awesome Customer service as the line was quickly served and my order taken and delivered within 5minutes. Great time. Lovely atmosphere with delicious treats to view. Took a loaf of bread home which brought back childhood memories of beautiful homemade loafs. Thank you, will be back on my next trip to Sydney
