Callan Park is a large, historic parkland in Lilyfield, with harbour glimpses, heritage buildings and plenty of room to explore. The sporting grounds within the park are off-leash, while the surrounding parkland is on-leash. It is peaceful and beautifully spread out, with informational historical features dotted throughout. A spacious, characterful spot that suits a long walk, with off-leash space on the open grounds.
Callan Park's sporting grounds (Balmain Road, Glover Street and Waterfront ovals) are off-leash except during organised sporting games, training and events. The surrounding parkland and the Bay Run are on-leash at all times.
Review: Callan Park, Lilyfield Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) A hauntingly beautiful mix of heritage and harbor views. Callan Park is a unique "choose-your-own-adventure" destination in Sydney's Inner West. It lacks the manicured polish of the Botanic Gardens, but it makes up for it with raw character and a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. The swin site has reopened after more than a decade closed The Highlights Architecture: The Kirkbride Complex is a sandstone masterpiece. Walking through the neo-classical courtyards feels like stepping back into 19th-century London. Nature: Home to some of the most impressive Moreton Bay Figs in the city. The giant root systems are incredible to see in person. The Bay Run: Perfect for a pit-stop if you are doing the Iron Cove loop. The waterfront section at Callan Point offers stunning, quiet views away from the main cycle path. Dog Friendly: One of the best spots in the area for off-leash exercise with plenty of space to roam. Things to Know The "Vibe": There is a lingering somberness due to its history as a psychiatric hospital. Some find it peaceful; others find the boarded-up wards a bit eerie. Facilities: Limited. Don't expect many cafes or high-end amenities within the park grounds—bring your own water and snacks. Maintenance: Many paths are uneven and several historic buildings are in a state of "gentle decay," which adds to the charm but might not suit everyone. Verdict: Go for the history, stay for the sunset over the water. It’s a must-visit for photographers and locals looking to escape the city noise.
A really interesting part of Sydney history alongside the water with lovely walking trails. 🌳 Callan Park was a mental hospital campus with some very beautiful buildings. It is no longer used for that purpose and some of the buildings are currently in use for various organizations. 🚲 The waterfront pathway forms a portion of the Bay Run, a 7km loop. Very popular with cyclists and runners. 🚶♀️There are ample walking tracks and green grass 🚻 The toilets are marked on Maps. They're old, but functional. ❗ Check out the mini Harbour Bridge! 🚧 Unfortunately, at the moment (April 2023), many areas are under construction. Still passable to walkers. 🚘 Parking available, although the road gets narrow on account of the construction. Runs out quickly on weekends during soccer season.
Callan Park is an absolute gem! It’s so peaceful, quiet, and beautifully maintained, making it the perfect spot to unwind. The park is massive, with plenty of space to explore and enjoy, whether you're on a walk or just relaxing. The waterfront is a stunning highlight - my dogs and I absolutely love spending time here. It’s always clean and never too crowded, which adds to the serene vibe. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a calm and picturesque spot!
I absolutely love the history embedded throughout this place. I'm so drawn to the energy and silent knowings behind each doorway.
It’s shameful that Callan Park has an illegal landfill abandoned for decades, destroying biodiversity, degrading the land, contaminating the soil and water and polluting the air. Environment being destroyed in the name of maintaining sandstone buildings. The laws do not seem to apply to government bodies.
