Sirius Cove is widely regarded as one of Sydney's best dog-friendly beaches, and it earns the reputation. Tucked into a quiet corner of Mosman's harbour foreshore, the sheltered cove has calm, shallow water that deepens gradually — making it as good for nervous first-time swimmers as it is for dogs that charge straight in. The large grassy reserve behind the sand is shaded by mature trees, with BBQs, picnic tables, a playground, drinking water, and toilets — the kind of setup that lets you stay for hours rather than just a quick dip. Off-leash access runs all day on weekdays, and before 9am and after 4pm on weekends and public holidays. The walking track heading east connects to Taronga Zoo Wharf and Bradleys Head, adding a scenic on-leash extension if you want it. It can get busy on weekends, so arriving early is worth it.
Off-leash on the beach and in the water all day Monday to Friday. Off-leash before 9am and after 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. Outside these times dogs must be on-leash. Effective control required at all times.
Sirius Cove Beach (often called Little Sirius Cove) is one of Sydney’s most charming "local secrets." Tucked away in a quiet pocket of Mosman, it’s a protected harbour beach that feels more like a backyard than a major tourist destination. Here is a breakdown of what to expect if you're planning a visit in 2026. The Vibe: A Dog and Family Paradise Sirius Cove is best known as one of Sydney’s premier dog-friendly beaches. It’s a social hub for four-legged friends, but it’s equally popular with young families because the water is incredibly calm. Since it’s a deep cove, there are virtually no waves, making it a safe spot for toddlers to splash or for paddleboarding. Essential Information.Feature Details Dog Rules Weekdays: Off-leash all day. Weekends/Public Holidays: Off-leash before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM (must be on-leash during the day). Facilities Toilets, outdoor showers, picnic tables, and a fenced playground. Swimming Very calm, shallow water. No shark nets, but generally considered safe due to the shallow, enclosed nature of the cove. Parking Very limited. There is a small car park at the end of Sirius Cove Road, but it fills up by 8:30 AM on weekends.Highlights & Hidden Gems The Curlew Camp Walk: From the beach, you can hop onto the Taronga Zoo to Bradleys Head walking track. It offers stunning views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and leads you through bushland rich with history (the area was a famous "artists' camp" in the late 19th century). Shade for Days: Unlike many ocean beaches, Sirius Cove has a massive grassy reserve with large trees providing plenty of natural shade—perfect for a long afternoon picnic. Sunset Views: Because the beach faces south/southwest, it catches a beautiful golden glow in the late afternoon, making it a prime spot for photographers. A Few Things to Keep in Mind Water Quality: Like all harbour beaches, it’s best to avoid swimming for 3 days after heavy rain due to stormwater runoff. The "Mosman Hills": If you can’t find a spot in the tiny car park, be prepared for a steep walk back up the residential streets. If you're coming by public transport, the Mosman Ferry is about a 15-minute walk away. The Crowd: If you aren't a "dog person," this might not be your spot. During off-leash hours, the beach is dominated by sprinting pups and flying tennis balls. The Verdict 4.5/5 Stars. Sirius Cove is unbeatable for a relaxed, low-key day out. It lacks the "glamour" of Balmoral or the surf of Manly, but it makes up for it with a sense of community and some of the best dog-watching in the city. I met and through the ball, pated a number of very friendly dogs 🐕
DOG park and beach. Off leash DOGS running and swimming on their #BestDayEver. Not suitable for picnics unless you bring deboned roast chicken for all the dogs of Mosman. Sharing is caring.
The most favorite dog beach, we had so much fun! My friend also loves bringing her dog along, and my little sausage had the best time ever!
A lovely beach, probably the most dog friendly one i’ve seen cuz i see like 20+ dogs there’s also a playground and a cool grassy sunbathing area with a trail to another beach and taronga zoo!
Sirius Cove Beach is a deep, calm inlet of Sydney Harbour, renamed for the flagship of the First Fleet, HMS Sirius. It’s where they removed barnacles from the ship’s hull in 1789, a mere 6 months before the ship was wrecked. This all took place on the land Borogegal People, in a suburb we now know as Mosman. Today the area is predominantly used by those with hounds. The Sirius Cove Reserve is an off-leash dog beach all day on weekdays, and before 9am and after 4pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Nobody taught these dogs to read though, so on this public holiday so there were balls and hounds flying every which way, with the quiet punctured by excited barks. On the eastern edge of the deep bay there is a set of stairs down from the sandstone retaining wall that will save you a bit of a trek across the shallows. It takes you in well beyond the hounds if they’re not your bag. The water is beautiful and clear, and filled with fish. We saw many airborne flashes of silver jumping between the moored boats. In terms of amenities, there’s a toilet block, dog and people watering fountains, barbecues and plenty of shade making this a nice place to swim on a hot day. Parking is reasonable, both close to the entrance to the reserve, and on the surrounding streets.
We check council regulations, official sources, and community reviews to verify dog access at every venue. Access may change — always check on-site signage. Something wrong or missing? Submit feedback. How it works.
