Geoff James Pool, Clovelly Beach: Nestled on the southern side of one of Sydney’s most unique coastal inlets, the Geoff James Pool offers a distinct "best of both worlds" experience. While Clovelly Beach itself is often described as a massive natural ocean pool due to its concrete promenades and calm waters, this formal 25-meter saltwater lap pool provides a more structured environment for those who want to focus on their stroke without dodging snorkelers or the occasional Blue Groper. Maintenance has finished and the pool is open again The Atmosphere & Design Unlike the rugged, spray-swept rock pools of Bronte or North Bondi, the Geoff James Pool feels integrated into the urban-coastal landscape. Carved into the rock shelf and surrounded by a wide concrete promenade, it has a functional, almost mid-century aesthetic. The Vibe: It’s a community hub. You’ll find serious lap swimmers in the early hours, followed by families and "sand-loathers" who prefer the warm concrete platforms to the small, often crowded sandy beach at the end of the bay. Recent Upgrades: As of late 2025, the pool has seen significant improvements, including a new fiberglass lining and upgraded accessible stairs at the southeast corner. These changes have made the entry much safer and more convenient than the old, weathered steps. Swimming Conditions Laps: The pool features four marked lanes (though sometimes only three are clearly visible depending on the light and water clarity). It’s perfect for those who want a saltwater workout without the unpredictability of the open surf. Water Quality: Being an ocean pool, it’s flushed by the tides. On a calm day, the water is crystal clear—resembling a chlorinated pool but with that unmistakable buoyancy of the Pacific. Protection: Because it sits within the sheltered Clovelly Bay, it’s rarely hit by the massive swells that can make other Sydney rock pools hazardous. Amenities & Accessibility Access: Clovelly is arguably the most accessible beach in the Eastern Suburbs. There is a ramp on the northern side for disabled access to the bay, and the 2025 upgrades to the Geoff James Pool specifically improved access for those with mobility challenges. Facilities: Public toilets, showers, and changing rooms are located nearby. Seasalt Clovelly, the local café, is just a short walk away for a post-swim coffee or halloumi roll. Parking: There is a large (and free!) car park on the southern side, which is a rare luxury in Sydney’s east, though it fills up rapidly on weekends. The Verdict The Geoff James Pool isn't for those seeking the "wild" ocean experience of Maroubra or the glamour of Icebergs. It is a practical, beautifully maintained, and highly accessible local treasure. Whether you are training for a swim or just want to lounge on the concrete like a seal after a quick dip, it remains one of the most reliable spots on the coastline. Pro Tip: Bring your snorkel anyway. Even if you spend your morning in the pool, the channel right next to it is famous for its friendly Blue Gropers.

Wander down the long concrete concourse towards the beach and if you’re not observant you may miss noticing this 4-lane 25 metre ocean pool tucked away on the left of the really big ocean pool that is Clovelly Bay. Built in the 60s and looking a bit worse for the wear, with heavy staining and a slimy coating, the setting of this one is it’s redeeming feature. Just next to a popular café and adjoining change and shower facilities, with loads of free parking, it has all the things… but it’s just not a great pool. Especially when compared with the enormous expanse of sheltered sea just next to it. We marked down The Geoff James Pool (Clovelly Ocean Pool). as one for the kids, while we moved on to a dip in the bay…

This pool is always either dirty or closed off. On the upside no one ever swims in it so you’ll have it to yourself.

This rating will increase in the summer. No one uses it in winter and it is a bit dirty with debris, leaves and maybe trash.
