North Bondi Beach ⛱️ has a free BBQ, s the only BBQ facilities on Bondi Beach, plus 2 kids swimming pools North Bondi is considered the "locals" part of the Bondi Beach area. Perched on a hill overlooking the Tasman Sea, it lacks the tourists and Sydneysiders who flock to the beach in summer. This also means that it's not as bustling a retail and dining scene as Bondi Beach, but it still offers a good selection of cafes and restaurants. North Bondi Beach is a few minutes walk away from Ben buckler shopping village. The atmosphere at Bondi Beach is noticeably heavy following the horrific terrorist attack on December 14, 2025. While the beach officially reopened to the public on December 18, the typical summer buzz has been replaced by a somber quiet. The Incident On the first night of Hanukkah, a father and son—later identified as Sajid and Naveed Akram—opened fire on a crowd of approximately 1,000 people attending the "Chanukah by the Sea" celebration at Archer Park. The attack, which left 15 dead and over 40 injured, has been officially declared an Islamic State–linked terrorist act and a targeted antisemitic attack. Impact on Crowds and Tourism Despite Bondi usually being at its peak capacity during the Christmas and Hanukkah period, current visitor numbers are significantly lower than average. Heightened Security: There is a visible police presence throughout the area. New South Wales has introduced sweeping reforms, including tougher firearm laws and increased powers to bar protests in the vicinity. Cancellations: Nearby hotels have reported a spike in last-minute cancellations. International and domestic tourists appear to be reassessing their travel plans, particularly for major upcoming events like New Year’s Eve. Mood of Resilience: While the sands are quieter, those present are often there to pay their respects. A memorial at the Bondi Pavilion has become a focal point for mourners, with flowers and tributes marking the tragedy. Current Status The area is safe but remains a site of active grieving. Most local businesses are open, though foot traffic is sparse. For those visiting, the experience is less about leisure and more about solidarity and reflection. Note: If you are in the area and feeling affected by these events, the NSW Government has established a Support Hub and provided access to mental health services via the Victims Support Scheme.

Although I am Muslim, I felt comfortable and at ease here, with a friendly atmosphere and diverse crowd. The visible presence of officers around the area adds a sense of safety and reassurance, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the beach, the views, and the lively yet laid-back energy.

A nice spot to relax on the beach or splash around in the waves. We went on Christmas Day and it was busy but that was to be expected, but there was still plenty of space to chill out. Obviously a popular tourist spot but if you're visiting Sydney, Bondi beach is something you can tick off your list. The water was a bit chilly but once we'd been in it for a bit it wasn't noticeable. It was also nice and clean when we went in, just the usual leaves, seaweed, etc. floating in the water. You'll also find plenty of showers to wash the sand off, and shops and restaurants nearby too. If you don't fancy walking back up the hill towards the city centre afterwards you can either opt for the 333 bus, or hire a Lime electric bike. Bring your own parasol or gazebo if you're looking for a bit of shelter from the sun during your visit as the beach is very open.
